YOUR STATE OF MIND DETERMINES THE EXPERIENCE YOU HAVE OF EVERYTHING
We all consistently create and re-create our lives via our current ‘state-of-mind’.
It’s how we think, feel and act in each moment. It’s the reality we live in a reality that works for or against ourselves; for or against our family, our friends, neighbours and colleagues; ultimately for or against the common good.
To be awake to this fact – that is, our state-of-mind is directing us moment to moment – is our passport to freedom.
To help us resolve our personal problems, the problems facing our family, our community and all humanity, is there anything more important to understand?
What follows sheds light on why you and I are the way we are. And why the world is the way it is. It reveals the source of all human experience, coming from a mind of Possibility or impossibility.
Please take ten minutes to read and see what you think. When you’ve finished, I’d appreciate hearing from you. Please email me with your thoughts: johnawood@therealmofpossibility.org.au
SO, WHAT’S BEHIND OUR STATE OF MIND?
It’s our thinking. Or to be exact, our thinking in each moment. That’s it.
OK, WHAT’S BEHIND OUR THINKING?
The source of our thinking is Thought (with a capital ‘T’ to distinguish it from the common use of the word).
Thought is the living energy represented by the waves displayed on an electroencephalograph (EEG) machine. Thought is what we humans have that enables us to think (with a small ‘t’) in ways other animals haven’t yet developed.
Thought is the source of our creative, destructive, every day, every-moment thinking.
NOW, WHAT’S BEHIND THOUGHT?
That source I leave as a mystery, and ever may it be so. I’ll let you know later why I prefer it to remain a mystery. That too is germane to understanding the way we create our experience.
Notwithstanding my thinking on this crucial point, the source isn’t seen as a mystery to many. Billions call it God. Others call it Universal Mind or Universal Intelligence. Still others call it Life or the Life Force, etc.
WHAT BRINGS THOUGHT TO THE PHYSICAL MOMENT-TO-MOMENT EXPERIENCE WE CALL ‘LIFE”.?
In one word: Consciousness. Our five senses bring Thought – our thinking – to life as our personal reality: our human experience.
By whatever name, Universal Mind is now claimed by millions be the source of Thought and Consciousness – and beyond that, the source of everything in the universe.
Whatever the genesis, Thought and Consciousness are established by science as two primary factors that give expression to the experience we call ‘life’.
Thought and Consciousness facilitate our living experience. Their source can be assumed, guessed at, believed in … By whatever name it’s called, it is seen with absolute certainty as ‘the truth of the matter’ by billions around the planet.
Unlike Thought and Consciousness, which can be established by scientific methods, their genesis/creation is a matter of belief – of faith. That is why I don’t include the source of these two highly developed human functions as a fact.
WHY DO I LIVE IN MYSTERY?
I neither believe in nor disbelieve in the existence of a supreme being – of God – of Universal Mind.
And no, I’m not an atheist. An atheist believes that there is no God and can be as equally certain of that as a Christian, Muslim, Hindu or any adherent of their offshoots is certain there is.
I’m agnostic. An agnostic doesn’t know if there is a supreme entity because it doesn’t appear that it can be known. We can believe, have faith, but can we know what supposedly created us?
The premise behind my philosophy of living is that to hold with certainty any idea, concept, belief, opinion, judgement or piece of knowledge is to be in a state of impossibility.
WHY IS LIVING IN CERTAINTY A STATE OF IMPOSSIBILITY?
Living with certainty leaves no possibility of:
- seeing something new, fresh, original (the start of all advances humanity has made),
- getting a fresh start in life or in relationship (experiencing a change of heart),
- resolving a conflict or dispute (the entrenched Israeli/Palestinian situation is one of countless examples),
- getting beyond ill will (that currently exists between Australia and China – England and Russia, et. al.),
- moving beyond being partisan, adversarial, conflictual (the way the Australian Parliament works – the way, it seems, all Parliaments work – the media – et. al.),
- humanity seeing beyond the prevailing reality and our conditioning around racism, bigotry, hatred, prejudice, sectarianism, partisanship, right and wrong, good and evil
- humanity seeing beyond all existing division and separation between human beings and their natural environment.
Would it not be helpful to consider life and all it entails beyond belief, opinions, judgements and current knowledge?
That’s the state called Possibility (with an intentional Capital ‘P’ to differentiate it from the common usage of that word)?
LIVING BEYOND BELIEVING?
Humanity, as a collective, is trapped in belief, opinion, judgement and knowledge.
By contrast, a state of Possibility is a state of genuine not knowing: an authentic state of openness. A mind free and clear of the past but still cognisant and respectful of what the past may mean to all involved.
Possibility is a state of mind in which our lifelong accumulation is ‘on tap’ but no longer ‘on top’.
Possibility allows us to explore what we are considering in a context of kindness, understanding, wisdom and common sense – each a hallmark of higher-order thinking about life and relationship.
Possibility is creativity flowing though us, in contrast to our stagnant past being the dominant reality, within which we search in vain for a way forward.
Possibility is The Realm within our mind of unlimited options, of previously unseen solutions – a quality of pragmatism that overcomes our dogmatism and certainty.
Possibility allows us to see beyond the known, respecting the obvious value in what exists but not being intimidated or limited by it.
Warmly … John
